Price-Setting Calculator

Work out a selling price from your cost, using either a margin on the selling price or a markup on cost, with GST and a list price that allows for discounts.

How this calculator works

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of cost. They are easy to confuse: a 25% markup on a ₹100 cost gives a price of ₹125, which is only a 20% margin.

To reach a margin, divide the cost by (1 − margin): a ₹1,200 cost with a 20% margin gives ₹1,500. To apply a markup, multiply the cost by (1 + markup).

GST is added on top of your price and passed to the government, so it is not part of your margin. Check the rate that applies to your HSN or SAC code.

If you give discounts, set the list price so that the price after the largest discount still gives the margin you need.

The result is only as good as the cost you enter. Use the full cost per unit, including a fair share of overheads.
