Rice Mills
In short
- For rice mills in Tamil Nadu: own-account mills, hulling agents for government agencies or traders, and mills that sell bran or bran oil.
- A rice mill works on a thin margin per quintal.
- The result turns on how much head rice each quintal of paddy gives, and on what the bran, brokens and husk fetch.
What usually goes wrong
- A one-point fall in head-rice recovery can take most of the margin on a quintal.
- Paddy is bought in a few weeks and milled over months. Holding it costs interest, storage and loss.
- A mill hulling for a government agency must hand back rice at a fixed out-turn. If it recovers less, it makes up the shortfall from its own pocket.
- Bran, brokens and husk pay for a large part of the milling. Their income belongs in the cost of rice.
What we do for you
- We measure head rice, brokens, bran and husk per quintal of paddy, by variety and lot.
- We reconcile paddy issued with rice and by-products delivered.
- We credit by-product income to the cost of rice, and value husk used as boiler fuel at what it would sell for.
- We cost power, parboiling fuel, labour and bags per quintal.
- We compare the margin per quintal from hulling for others with milling on your own account.
- We plan paddy stock, bank limits and cash month by month for the season.
We work from your own records, and we show you how each figure was worked out.
